Fewer U.S. Companies Planning to Hire; Europe Looms—Poll

U.S. companies are curbing plans to hire new employees, and an increasing number of companies feel the European debt crisis is negatively affecting their sales, according to a survey by the National Association for Business Economics. Just 23% of the companies surveyed intend to hire additional staff in the next six months. NABE’s prior survey, conducted in March and April, indicated that 39% of companies planned to hire new employees.

Economic Growth Gauge Rises: ECRI

The Economic Cycle Research Institute’s Weekly Leading Index, a measure of future economic growth, rose to 123.2 in the week ended July 6, the highest level since May 11. The index’s annualized growth rate rose to -2.2% from a revised -2.8% a week earlier.
