Consumer Prices in U.S. Rose in September as Fuel Costs Jumped
Bloomberg (10/16/12) Alex Kowalski
The cost of living in the U.S. climbed in September for a second month, reflecting a jump in energy expenses that failed to trickle through to other goods and services. The U.S. Department of Labor’s consumer-price index rose 0.6% for a second month in a row. Economists polled by Bloomberg had forecast a 0.5% gain. Companies ranging from Abercrombie & Fitch to Safeway say price increases are difficult to achieve as 12.1 million Americans remain unemployed and rising fuel bills eat into employees’ paychecks.
Home Builder Confidence Rises to Highest Level in Six Years
Los Angeles Times (10/17/12) Tiffany Hsu
Home builder sentiment rose this month to the strongest level since June 2006. The one-point gain in the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo index represented the sixth consecutive uptick, while prospective buyer traffic for October climbed five points to a score of 35, the highest level since April 2006. Still, NAHB chairman Barry Rutenberg expressed concern that “overly tight credit conditions are still constraining new building and new purchases.”
