MRINetwork Names John McDonald as New President

CDI Corp. subsidiary MRINetwork, an executive search and recruitment firm, has appointed John McDonald president. Prior to joining MRINetwork, McDonald served as president and chief operating officer of Service Brands International, a franchise system with a broad portfolio of home services brands. He also has worked in the recruitment industry as vice president of North American sales for ManpowerGroup.

DLC Acquires Beacon Resources

DLC, a portfolio company of Gryphon Investors, has acquired executive search firm Beacon Resources LLC of Newport Beach, CA, for an undisclosed sum. The combined company will have more than 250 consultants and serve clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 1000 companies. Each company will keep its brand identity under the banner of DLC Group, and Beacon will continue to be led by chief executive officer Mike Kelly.

GDP Expanded at 4.2% Rate in Second Quarter

U.S. gross domestic product grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.2% during the second quarter, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The previous estimate was a 4.0% growth rate, while economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal had forecast a 3.8% pace. Business spending grew more than expected, while American corporations posted higher profits.

GDP contracted at a 2.1% rate during the first quarter. The economy averaged a weak growth rate of 1.1% during the first half of the year.

Jobless Claims in U.S. Little Changed as Job Market Strengthens

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Aug. 23 decreased by 1,000 to 298,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 46 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 300,000. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 1,250 to 299,750.

Richmond Fed: Manufacturing Sector Activity Strengthened

Fifth District manufacturing activity continued to improve in August, according to the most recent survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond (VA). The composite index for manufacturing climbed to a reading of 12, the highest reading since March 2011. Although manufacturing employment and average wages rose at a slower pace this month, the average workweek lengthened. The manufacturing employment index fell two points this month to 11. The average workweek index rose five points to eight, while the index for average wages fell five points to 11.

Manufacturers anticipate stronger business conditions during the next six months. They expect faster growth in shipments and new orders and believe order backlogs will grow more quickly. Survey participants’ outlook for the months ahead also include faster growth in average wages and the average workweek, with an increase in hiring. However, the index for expected employment dropped one point from last month’s reading to 18.
