Conference Board Employment Trends Index Declined in September

Conference Board News Release (10/09/12)

The Conference Board Employment Trends Index decreased again in September, following a downward revision in August. The index now stands at 107.86, down from the revised figure of 108.23 in August. The September figure is 5.4% higher than a year ago.

“The index declined for the third time in four months, suggesting that employment growth will weaken further in the fourth quarter,” says Gad Levanon, director of macroeconomic research at the Conference Board. “The U.S. economy entered a soft patch in the spring and the result has been lackluster job growth, which is likely to continue through the first half of 2013.”

Walmart Labor Protests Grow, Organizers Say

New York Times (10/10/12) Steven Greenhouse

Protests against Walmart expanded on Oct. 9, spreading to 28 stores in 12 states, in an effort to increase pressure on the retailer as the holiday season approaches. Dan Schlademan, director of the union-backed Making Change at Walmart campaign, added that more than 200 employees were traveling to Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, AR, to stage a protest on Oct. 10 during the company’s annual meeting with financial analysts, and warned that disgruntled Walmart employees, joined by labor unions and community groups, might stage a combined protest and educational campaign the Friday after Thanksgiving, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. Organizers say the protests are aimed at pressing Walmart to increase wages, stop cutting workers’ hours, and treat employees with respect. Many workers at Walmart warehouses were hired through temporary staffing firms.

Karen Pitts Inducted Into ASA Leadership Hall of Fame

Karen Pitts, co-chief executive officer of Link Staffing Services Inc., was inducted into the ASA Leadership Hall of Fame Oct. 9 during the opening general session of Staffing World 2012 in Las Vegas. The award was created in 1985 to recognize outstanding individual contributions made through dedicated service to ASA and the staffing industry.

Pitts began her staffing industry career in 1976 when she launched Nurses PRN Inc., which she grew to seven offices in six states in three years. She then served as vice president of Med-Staff Inc., a large medical staffing company. In 1980, she joined her husband Bill to build Link Staffing Services from a small office in downtown Houston into a national industrial staffing company with 50 locations in 14 states.

A long-time industry leader and advocate, Pitts was chairman of the ASA board of directors in 1995, when she led the development of a strategic plan to unite the industry under a single association, representing all industry sectors, including health care, direct hire, information technology, engineering, and professional. The 2012 ASA Leadership Hall of Fame is sponsored by Dice.
