Stagnant Wages Are Crimping Economic Growth

Wall Street Journal (08/25/13) Neil Shah

U.S. workers’ pay is not keeping up with inflation. According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, the average hourly pay for nongovernment, nonsupervisory workers—adjusted for price increases—declined to $8.77 last month from $8.85 in June 2009. Stagnant wages make it more difficult for workers to purchase consumer items, which drive the nation’s economic growth. Economists blame stagnant wages on a slow economic growth rate, companies’ refusal to increase wages, and the pressures of global competition.

Workers do not feel confident they can demand higher wages, and do not feel confident they can leave their jobs to find better work. In the short term, real wages are expected to grow by 1% by the end of 2014. In the long term, median income is expected to drop over the next two decades as the American population ages.

Orders for U.S. Durable Goods Fell More Than Forecast

Bloomberg (08/26/13) Michelle Jamrisko

Orders for U.S. durable goods declined more than expected in July following three months of increases, suggesting manufacturing will be slow to rebound. Bookings for durable goods fell 7.3%, after a 3.9% increase in June, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecasted a 4% decline.

Soft global demand and the effects of federal spending cuts continue to restrain manufacturing, which comprises approximately 12% of the economy. Orders excluding transportation equipment, which tend to be volatile, fell 0.6% following a 0.1% gain in June.

ASA Staffing Employment and Sales Survey Closes Today

Share your firm’s data with ASA so you can get the staffing industry information you’re looking for—participate in the association’s quarterly Staffing Employment and Sales Survey. Staffing firms that complete the survey receive an exclusive report on the results, which includes temporary and contract staffing sales and gross margin data by sector.

The data collected by this survey are essential to the association’s legal and legislative advocacy efforts on behalf of the staffing industry. Register to take the survey or view a PDF version of the questionnaire at americanstaffing.net. This survey is conducted by ASA research partner Inavero, and there are no fees to participate.

ACA Content Added to ASA Certification Programs

The ASA Certified Staffing Professional® and Technical Services CertifiedSM programs now include critical content related to the Affordable Care Act. The ACA imposes major new legal obligations on employers, including additional excise taxes, which will increase the cost of supplying temporary and contract workers. Under the ACA employer mandate that takes effect Jan. 1, 2015, and using a one-year “look back” period, staffing firms must start tracking full-time and “variable hour” employees starting Jan. 1, 2014.

Questions about this and other important aspects of the ACA will be included in the CSP® and TSCSM exams starting in September. The ASA certification study materials, which are provided when you order a certification package, now include information to help you prepare for these exam questions.
