Robert Half Reports First-Quarter Financial Results

Robert Half International Inc. reported revenues of $1.08 billion for the first quarter of 2014, up 5.9% from $1.02 billion in the first quarter of 2013. Net income totaled $61.6 million, up 10.2% from $55.9 million in the year-ago quarter. U.S. staffing revenues totaled $720 million, up 6.0% on a same-day basis from the prior year’s first quarter.
By segment, revenue totaled $383 million for Accountemps, up 1.7% from $376.6 million; $211.1 million for OfficeTeam, up 4.7% from $201.6 million; $132.3 million for Robert Half Technology, up 9.3% from $121 million; $131.2 million for Robert Half Management Resources, up 5.6% from $124.2 million; $92.6 million for Robert Half Finance & Accounting, up 11.0% from $83.4 million; and $134.1 million for Protiviti, up 14.7% from $116.9 million.

On Assignment Inc. reported revenues of $439.3 million for the first quarter of 2014, up 15.9% from $379 million in the first quarter of 2013. Net income totaled $13.9 million, compared with $24.6 million in the year-ago quarter (when results included a $14.4 million gain from the sale of its Nurse Travel division). By segment, revenue totaled $278.4 million for Apex, up 16.1% from $239.8 million; $117.5 million for Oxford, up 14.4% from $102.7 million; and $31.8 million for physician staffing, up 20.9% from $26.3 million.
Jobless Claims Rise More Than Forecast in U.S. Holiday Week

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended April 19 rose by 24,000 to 329,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, though officials said the adjustment during spring holidays is difficult to quantify. Forty-four economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 315,000. The four-week moving average of new claims rose by 4,750 to 316,750.
