ASA Staffing Index: Staffing Employment Edges Up in June

Staffing employment grew slightly in the week of June 12–18, with the ASA Staffing Index increasing by 0.4% to a rounded value of 100. Staffing companies listed factors—including temporary-to-hire conversions and a holiday—as barriers preventing further growth. Staffing jobs were 6.2% below the same week last year.

New starts in the 24th week of the year grew 1.2% from the prior week as about a third of staffing companies (35%) reported gains in new assignments week to week.

“Staffing employment remains behind 2022 levels but has edged up in recent weeks after a lull over Memorial Day weekend,” said Tim Hulley, ASA assistant director of research.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average held steady at a rounded value of 99, and temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending June 18 was 5.9% lower than the same period in 2022.

This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the June monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics July 7.
