The Institute for Supply Management said Thursday that its services index for August rose to 53.7 from 52.6 in July. A reading above 50 means the sector is expanding. ISM’s employment gauge rose to its highest level since April, reaching 53.8 from a July reading of 49.3, which was the lowest level in almost a year.
