The Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing purchasing managers’ index fell from 54.4 in March to 53.1 in April. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. Like the PMI, the ISM subindexes mostly slowed but remained expansionary. The employment index declined from 53.3 to 52.0. The ISM nonmanufacturing data comes mainly from service-sector companies but also includes construction and public administration.
