The U.S. Senate has confirmed Thomas Perez as the new U.S. labor secretary in a 54-46 party-line vote. Perez, the head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s civil-rights division, had encountered strong opposition from Republicans, who say workplace regulation has been too aggressive under President Obama and could become even more aggressive under Perez. Perez says his top priority in his new role will be “jobs, jobs, and jobs.”
