Jobless claims rose 13,000 to 336,000 during the week ended Aug. 17, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted an increase to 330,000. However, the number of people who applied for unemployment benefits over the past month was the lowest in more than five years, demonstrating an improving labor market. The four-week average of new jobless claims fell to 330,500, the lowest since November 2007.
