The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits fell during the week ended Aug. 31, demonstrating improvements in the labor market. Jobless claims dropped by 9,000 to 323,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted a drop to 330,000. The four-week average of new jobless claims dropped to 328,500 from 331,500, reaching its lowest point since October 2007.
