U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (09/10/13)
A new report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the number of job openings nationwide at the end of July barely changed from the previous month at 3.7 million, and the 3.2% hires rate and 3.0% separations rate were little changed as well. There were 4.4 million hires in July, little changed for total nonfarm and government on a year-to-year basis but up for total private jobs.
The report also shows 4.1 million separations in July, with a quits rate of 1.7% for nonfarm, 1.9% for private, and 0.6% for government, and a layoffs and discharges rate of 1.1% overall. There was a net employment gain of 1.9 million during the year-to-year period, with a total of 52.1 million hires and 50.2 million separations.
