Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week than forecasted, indicating that employers are retaining their staffs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, jobless claims rose 1,000 to 308,000 in the week ended Sept. 28.
Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted a rise to 315,000. The less-volatile four-week moving average dropped to 305,000 last week, reaching its lowest point since May 2007. Any claims filed by furloughed federal employees will not be included in the figures in the coming weeks.
