The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s mid-Atlantic manufacturing index increased to 16.6 in April from 9.0 in March, the strongest reading since September and stronger than MarketWatch’s economist forecast of 10.0. Severe winter weather resulted in a negative 6.3 reading in February. New orders rose to 14.8 in April, shipments grew to 22.7, and inventories increased to negative 1.5 from negative 6.8.
