Jobless Claims in U.S. Decline to Lowest Level in Seven Years

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended May 10 fell by 24,000 to 297,000—the lowest since May 2007—according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 320,000. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 2,000 to 323,250.

U.S. Consumer Prices Rise at Strongest Rate in Nearly a Year

Consumer prices increased last month at their strongest rate in almost a year, a sign of modest inflation pressures. The consumer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.3% in April from March, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Core prices, which exclude the volatile food and energy categories, increased 0.2% in April. The gains were in line with the forecasts of economists polled by the Wall Street Journal.

New York Fed Manufacturing Index Jumps to 19.01 in May

New York’s business conditions index rose to 19.01 in May from 1.29 in April, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Empire State Manufacturing Survey. The reading was the highest seen since mid-2010 and supports the belief that the economy may improve this quarter. A reading above zero indicates expansion.

Meanwhile, the employment index increased to 20.88 in May from 8.16 in April, while the workweek index rose to 2.20 from 2.04.
