The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended May 24 fell by 27,000 to 300,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 50 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 318,000. The four-week moving average dropped by 11,250 to 311,500, the lowest since August 2007, prior to the recession.
