U.S. Consumers Feeling More Upbeat on Economy, Jobs, Report Suggests

The Thomson-Reuters and University of Michigan June sentiment index increased to 82.5 from a preliminary reading of 81.2 and a final May reading of 81.9. Economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal had forecast a reading of 81.9 for June. The index on current economic conditions increased to a reading of 96.6 from an early June reading of 95.4, and the expectations index rose to 73.5 from 72.2.

Workplace Secrecy Agreements Appear to Violate Federal Whistleblower Laws

Employers increasingly are requiring workers to sign overly restrictive nondisclosure agreements that sometimes prevent them from talking to government regulators. Even government agencies and contractors are using the agreements, which traditionally have been used to protect trade secrets but now skirt the limits of legality. Fear of retaliation against whistleblowers is on the rise on Wall Street and among federal employees, and pressure is mounting to improve whistleblowing protections. Some businesses are requiring employers to report wrongdoing to their supervisors before talking to regulators.
