Kelly Services Reports Second-Quarter Results

Kelly Services Inc. reported revenue of $1.41 billion for the second quarter of 2014, up 3.2% from $1.37 billion in the second quarter of 2013. Net earnings totaled $2.8 million, down 72.6% from $10.0 million in the year-ago quarter.

The company’s revenue for the Americas totaled $905.3 million, up 0.6% (1.3% in constant currency) from $900.0 million in the 2013 second quarter. By segment, revenue totaled $96.5 million for the Asia-Pacific region, down 1.2% (up 1.8% in constant currency) from $97.7 million; and $137.9 million for outsourcing and consulting services, up 16.5% (16.8% in constant currency) from $118.3 million.

CDI Corp. Reports Second-Quarter 2014 Results

CDI Corp. reported revenue of $284.3 million for the second quarter of 2014, up 7.9% from $263.4 million in the second quarter of 2013. Net income totaled $4.4 million, up 29.0% from $3.5 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenue for the company’s professional staffing services segment totaled $184.7 million, up 9.5% from $168.8 million in the 2013 second quarter.

Revenue increased 64.0% in oil, gas, and chemicals. Management Recruiters International Inc.’s second quarter revenue increased 4.2% to $15.3 million, driven by an increase in contract staffing. MRI’s second quarter operating profit was $1.8 million, compared with $2.1 million in the year-ago quarter.

RCM Technologies Inc. Acquires Point Comm Inc.

Technology services and health care staffing company RCM Technologies has announced the acquisition of Point Comm Inc., a Toronto, Ontario-based engineering company. Point Comm specializes in providing high-voltage electrical equipment for substations and power plants.

Services Sector Expands in July

The Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing index for July rose to 58.7 from 56.0 in June, the highest level since January 2008. Forecasters surveyed by the Wall Street Journal had forecast a reading of 56.5. A reading above 50 indicates growth. The construction industry played a large part in the increase, and the only sector that saw a decrease in business activity was utilities. Meanwhile, the employment index rose to 56.0 from 54.4.

U.S. Factory Orders up 1.1% in June

Factory orders rose 1.1% in June from May, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Factory orders had declined 0.6% from April to May following three months of growth. Orders for commercial aircraft, which rose 8.4%, led the June gains, but orders in less volatile categories such as machinery, computers and electronic products, and iron and steel suggest businesses are anticipating economic expansion. Factory orders have risen 2.5% over the past year.
