The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Aug. 2 dropped by 14,000 to 289,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 47 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 304,000. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 4,000 to 293,500, the lowest level since February 2006.
