The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Oct. 11 decreased by 23,000 to 264,000, the fewest since April 2000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 290,000. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 4,250 to 283,500, the lowest since June 2000.
