There were 5.0 million job openings on the last business day of March, little changed from 5.1 million in February, according to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hires were little changed at 5.1 million in March, and separations were little changed at 5.0 million. Within separations, the quits rate was 2.0%, and the layoffs and discharges rate was 1.3%; both rates were little different from the previous month. Over the 12 months ending in March 2015, hires totaled 59.7 million and separations totaled 56.7 million, yielding a net employment gain of 3.0 million. These totals include workers who may have been hired and separated more than once during the year.
