The number of job openings was little changed at 5.4 million on the last business day of May, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of hires was unchanged at 5.0 million in May, and the number of separations was little changed at 4.7 million. Within separations, the quits rate was unchanged at 1.9% and the layoffs and discharges rate was little changed at 1.2%.
Job openings rose over the year for many industries with the largest increases occurring in retail trade, professional and business services, and health care and social assistance.
