The number of people applying for unemployment benefits rose by 5,000 to 274,000 in the week ended Aug. 8, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast claims of 270,000. The four-week average of new claims declined by 1,750 to a seasonally adjusted 266,250, its lowest level since April 2000.
