The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Sept. 26 rose by 10,000 to 277,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast claims of 270,000. The four-week average of new claims fell by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 270,500.
