The number of job openings was little changed at 5.4 million on the last business day of October, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of hires was little changed at 5.1 million in October, and the number of separations was little changed at 4.9 million. Within separations, the quits rate was 1.9% for the seventh consecutive month, and the layoffs and discharges rate was 1.2%.
Job openings rose over the year for many industries with the largest increases occurring in health care and social assistance, retail trade, and state and local government.
