There were 4.0 million job openings on the last business day of December according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, showing little change from November in all industries and regions. The hires rate and the separation rate both remained at 3.2%, little changed from November. The number of job openings increased over the year for total nonfarm and total private and was little changed for government. The 12 months prior to December yielded a net employment gain of 1.9 million jobs.
