The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended May 10 fell by 24,000 to 297,000—the lowest since May 2007—according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 320,000. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 2,000 to 323,250.
