Last Week’s Jobless Claims in U.S. Plunged More Than Forecast

Bloomberg (04/11/13) Shobhana Chandra; Lorraine Woellert

The number of people who applied for new unemployment benefits fell sharply last week after a big increase the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today, with initial claims declining by 42,000 to 346,000 in the week ended April 6. The median forecast of 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a drop to 360,000. The average of new claims over the past month rose by 3,000 to 358,000. The sudden change from the week before suggests an unwinding of a surge caused by the Easter holiday and spring break at schools.

Labor Forecast Predicts 5.9% Increase in Demand for Temporary Workers

G. Palmer & Associates News Release (04/10/13)

Demand for temporary workers in the U.S. is expected to increase 5.9% on a seasonally adjusted basis for the 2013 second quarter, when compared with the same period in 2013, according to the Palmer Forecast.

The Palmer Forecast indicated a 4.7% increase in temporary help for the just-ended 2013 first quarter. Actual results came in as slightly higher at a 6.0% increase. Results, in part, reflected increasing uncertainty on behalf of employers with respect to permanent hiring.

Temporary help created approximately 11.0% of new jobs reported since the recovery began, and 23% in March, while representing only about 2% of the total labor market. There is also speculation among temporary industry veterans that the increase could be an early sign of the anticipated positive impact on temporary labor relative to the Affordable Care Act, planned for implementation in 2014. At such time, companies may begin to increase the use of temporary labor as a strategic measure to offset anticipated increases in health care costs.

Forecast: Staffing Industry Revenues to Grow 6%

Staffing Industry Analysts (04/09/13)

U.S. staffing industry revenue will grow 6% in both 2013 and 2014, according to a forecast released on April 9 by Staffing Industry Analysts. The industry had grown by 7% in 2012 and 13% in 2011. Timothy Landhuis, the author of the report, says the fastest-growing individual sector of staffing in 2013 will be health care, which will grow by 9%.

ASA Certification Exams Updated for 2013

Are you currently studying for the Certified Staffing Professional® or Technical Services CertifiedSM exam? Did you recently pass the exam? Or are you just starting your research on the credentials that ASA offers?

ASA strives to bring you the most current information regarding state and federal labor and employment laws. Each year, the ASA certification team works closely with the law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP to review which state laws have changed within the past year and update ASA certification online exams and study materials.

See if the laws in your state have changed when you’re studying for the CSP® or TSCSM exam. If you have already passed the exam, refer to americanstaffing.net to stay up-to-date on your state’s laws.

More than 6,000 staffing professionals across the U.S. have earned the CSP or TSC credential. If you are not ASA certified, now is the perfect time to join them by earning an ASA designation—the only staffing industry certification based on current state and federal employment.

The new direct hire certification program, specifically designed for search and placement professionals, will focus on federal employment laws specific to recruiters and on state licensing and registration laws applicable to direct hire firms. ASA will release study tools, a practice exam, and the online exam for the CSCSM credential next month at the ASA Staffing Law Conference in Washington, DC, May 7–8. (The 2013 ASA Staffing Law Conference has sold out, but ASA members may purchase recordings of the sessions.)
