Part-Time Work Becomes Full-Time Wait for Better Job

New York Times (04/20/13) Catherine Rampell

Although job growth has been strong of late, 7.6 million Americans who would like to work longer hours have been working at part-time or temporary jobs. Although increases in the number of people with part-time or temporary jobs can be an early indicator that companies will soon engage in more permanent hiring, many employees have been working at part-time or temporary jobs for much longer than they had expected.

“This job recovery has been more modest than previous cycles,” says Joseph A. LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank in New York. “That, the corporate uncertainty, and the recent financial crisis have caused a lot of companies to worry about access to financing. They want to hold extraordinary amounts of cash in this environment, and they’re reluctant to make a more permanent commitment to hiring or hiring someone full time.”

Spring Economic Swoon Arrives on Time

MarketWatch (04/22/13) Jeffry Bartash

Even though Friday’s gross domestic product numbers are expected to be favorable, softer consumer spending, tepid manufacturing growth, and a slower pace of private-sector hiring point to a midyear economic slowdown. “It’s just like 2012. There will be ups and downs throughout the year,” says Paul Edelstein, director of financial economics at IHS Global Insight. “We’re in an uneven recovery.” Economists surveyed by MarketWatch forecast that growth will slow to 1.8% or less in the second quarter. However, Ryan Sweet of Moody’s Analytics says, “I don’t think there is any reason to worry about a recession.”

Celebrating Earth Day? Earn Recognition for Your Firm’s Environmental Efforts

Today marks the 43rd annual celebration of Earth Day. Has your firm recently spearheaded an environmentally friendly campaign?

If so, submit an entry for this year’s ASA Care Award. The award program recognizes outstanding corporate social responsibility initiatives among ASA member companies and affiliated chapters. Many ASA member companies have implemented environmentally sustainable programs in their business processes. DRA Recruiting & Staffing Solutions, a past Care Award recipient, created a “Growing Greener” campaign that the company estimates achieved a 65% reduction of waste company-wide.
