Staffing World Welcomes Patrick Lencioni, Plus Your Industry Peers

Staffing World 2013, the ASA annual convention and expo, continues today and tomorrow at the Marriott World Center Resort and Convention Center in Orlando. There are more than 1,600 attendees and exhibitors gathered to enjoy two more intense days of high-quality educational content, networking, and expo hall shopping.

Today’s general session honored the 2014 National Staffing Employee of the Year, Matthew Earley. National Staffing Employee of the Year is sponsored by First Staff Benefits. Then, introduced by a flashmob organized by keynote sponsor Monster, Patrick Lencioni spoke to an enthusiastic crowd.

Yesterday’s keynote speaker Erik Wahl created a painting onstage that he has donated to be auctioned today—proceeds from the auction will benefit Jobs for America’s Graduates.

Today’s educational workshops begin at 2:30 p.m., and the Knowledge Network is at 4:15 p.m. Plus, don’t miss the happy hour in the expo hall from 6 to 7 p.m.

TSR Inc. Reports Financial Results

TSR Inc. has reported net revenue of $12.1 million for the fiscal first quarter ended in August, up 7.1% from $11.3 million during the same period a year ago. The company also reported net income of $11,000, compared with a net loss of $93,000 in the first quarter of last year, marking a gain of 111.8%.

Yellen Is Obama’s Choice as Fed Chief

President Obama will nominate the U.S. Federal Reserve’s second in command, Janet Yellen, to run the central bank. Yellen’s nomination, which the White House said will be announced today, will be subject to Senate confirmation, which may be delayed due to the federal government shutdown. Her nomination means that the Fed is unlikely to make any big moves in monetary policy over the near term.

Florida to Briefly Stop Accepting Jobless Claims

Florida citizens will not be able to file jobless claims for several days beginning at 12 noon today. The state’s online system that processes the claims is being taken offline until Oct. 15 so the state can implement a new computer system.

ACA Content Added to ASA Certification Programs

The ASA Certified Staffing Professional^® and Technical Services Certified^SM programs now include critical content related to the Affordable Care Act. The ACA imposes major new legal obligations on employers, including additional excise taxes, which will increase the cost of supplying temporary and contract workers. Under the ACA employer mandate that takes effect Jan. 1, 2015, and using a one-year “look back” period, staffing firms must start tracking full-time and “variable hour” employees starting Jan. 1, 2014.

The CSP^® and TSC^SM exams now include 10 questions about this and other important aspects of the ACA. The ASA certification study materials, which are provided when you order a certification package, also include information to help you prepare for these exam questions.
