U.S. Hotel Staffing Company Files for Bankruptcy, Seeks Sale
(10/24/13) Tom Hals
Atlanta-based Hospitality Staffing Solutions Group LLC has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will hold a court-supervised auction of its businesses. The large U.S. provider of housekeeping staff for hotels was acquired by Frontenac Co. for $80 million in 2010 and shortly after encountered problems with employee verification and other operational issues that—coupled with increased competition and the sluggish economic recovery—strained the company’s finances. Nine of its Hospital Staffing affiliates also filed for bankruptcy.
Job Openings and Labor Turnover Steady in August
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 3.9 million job openings at the end of August, on par with the previous month. There were 4.5 million hires in August and 4.4 million total separations, and the 3.3% hires rate and the 3.2% separations rate were little changed from July. The report was delayed more than two weeks by the partial government shutdown at the beginning of the month.
The rate of voluntary quits also held steady at 1.7% for total nonfarm, 2.0% for total private, and 0.6% for government, and also holding steady was the layoffs and discharges rate at 1.2%. The agency reported 52.3 million hires and 50.4 million separations during the year-to-year period ending in August, amounting to a net employment gain of 1.9 million.
Orders for U.S. Durable Goods Increase on Aircraft Demand
(10/25/13) Jeanna Smialek
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, orders for U.S. durable goods rose by the most in three months in September, fueled by a strong demand for commercial and military aircraft that overcame a drop in business equipment.
Orders for goods meant to last at least three years rose 3.7% after a revised 0.2% increase in August. Bloomberg economists had forecast a gain of 2.3%. Demand for capital equipment fell 1.1%. Strong domestic auto and housing markets are continuing to bolster expansion.
