Hospitality Staffing Solutions LLC Completes Asset Sale to Private Investment Firm
Hospitality Staffing Solutions LLC, a provider of outsourced staffing solutions for the hospitality industry, yesterday announced that it has completed the sale of its assets to HS Solutions Corp. The announcement marks Hospitality Staffing’s official emergence from Chapter 11. Hospitality Staffing voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 as part of a strategic move to facilitate the asset sale.
Orders for U.S. Durable Goods Unexpectedly Slump

Orders for durable goods declined by 4.3% in December, following a downwardly revised gain of 2.6% in November, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecasted a 1.8% increase in December. The slump increases the risk business investment may fall off early this year. Stagnant wages and inconsistent job gains are contributing to limited prospects for companies’ consumers.
Orders excluding transportation equipment declined 1.6% following a 0.1% increase in November.
Obama Tries New Tack for Long-Term Jobless

In tonight’s State of the Union address, President Obama will ask companies to voluntarily pledge not to refuse to hire the long-term jobless. Congress and 24 state legislatures have considered bills banning jobless discrimination, but only those in New Jersey and Oregon have become law, and they are strictly limited. Obama will announce that he already has secured pledges from major U.S. employers such as Procter & Gamble Co., U.S. Bancorp, and Xerox Corp.
Some 37.7% of the 10.4 million Americans who are unemployed have been so for more than six months, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Studies have shown that people unemployed for six months or longer are much less likely to be contacted for job interviews.
