U.S. GDP Advances 3.2% in Fourth Quarter

Wall Street Journal (01/30/14) Sarah Portlock; Jonathan House

Buoyed in part by an improving labor market, gross domestic product grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.2% in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The rate was in line with forecasts by economists surveyed by Dow Jones. The last time the economy grew by an annual rate of 3.0% or more was prior to the recession, when it topped a 3.4% pace in 2005.

The GDP rate in the second half of 2013 was 3.7%, significantly higher than the 1.8% rate seen in the first half of the year. In 2012, GDP grew at an annual rate of 2.8%. The U.S. Federal Reserve says the economy will grow between 2.8% and 3.2% this year.

NFL Hires Temporary Employees for Super Bowl

New York Times (01/28/14) Tom Pedulla

The National Football League has decided to hire paid temporary employees instead of volunteers to work at this year’s Super Bowl. The move likely was in response to a class-action lawsuit brought against Major League Baseball, which did not pay volunteers at a fan festival in July.

“We are aware of the ongoing litigation against Major League Baseball,” says Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesperson. “Due in part to the size and complexity of the Super Bowl, we determined that it was advisable to use paid staff in certain roles this year. We have hired 1,500 temporary paid staffers who will perform specific functions at NFL events.”

  • OSHA’s Temporary Worker Safety Initiative: What Staffing Firms Need to Know—an update from David Michaels, Ph.D., MPH, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health at the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • 2014 Midterm Elections: How the Outcomes Could Affect Business—an election preview by political analyst and pundit Charlie Cook, editor and publisher of the Cook Political Report
