The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended April 19 rose by 24,000 to 329,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, though officials said the adjustment during spring holidays is difficult to quantify. Forty-four economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 315,000. The four-week moving average of new claims rose by 4,750 to 316,750.
