Record Attendance at the ASA Staffing Law Conference

The first day of the sold-out ASA Staffing Law Conference in Washington, DC, began with a speech by David Michaels, Ph.D., MPH, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health for the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. He told the standing-room-only crowd about OSHA’s national temporary worker safety initiative and staffing firms’ role in protecting the nation’s temporary workers.

At the end of Michaels’ session, he and ASA president and chief executive officer Richard Wahlquist announced a joint alliance in which OSHA and ASA will work together to enhance temporary worker safety.

Conference attendees also filled the room for sessions by Charlie Cook, editor and publisher of the Cook Political Report; immigration expert Helen L. Konrad, Esq.; and employment discrimination expert Gerald L. Maatman Jr., Esq.

The conference continued today with a panel discussion of attorneys who work for staffing companies and the highly anticipated “ACA Countdown: Are You Ready for the Employer Mandate?” ASA senior counsel Ed Lenz and several staffing industry experts eased attendees’ concerns about the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate and gave them the knowledge they needed to make final preparations to ensure compliance with the law.

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for the U.S. Increased in April

Conference Board News Release (05/22/14)

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for the U.S. increased 0.4% in April to 101.4, following a 1.0 percent increase in March and a 0.5% increase in February. “The LEI rose for the third consecutive month, driven largely by improving housing and financial market conditions,” says Ataman Ozyildirim, economist at the Conference Board. “This latest report suggests the economy will continue to expand, and may even pick up steam through the second half of the year.”

“Despite a brutal winter which brought the economy to a halt, the overall trend in the leading economic index has remained positive,” says Ken Goldstein, economist at the Conference Board. “If consumers continue to spend, and businesses pick up the pace of investment, the industrial core of the economy will benefit and [gross domestic product] growth could move closer towards the 3.0% range.”

Jobless Claims in U.S. Increased More Than Forecast

Bloomberg (05/22/14) Shobhana Chandra

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended May 17 increased by 28,000 to 326,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 50 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 310,000.

Fed Officials Tussle Over Labor Market Slack

Wall Street Journal (05/21/14) Jon Hilsenrath

Minutes of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s April 29-30 policy meeting detail a debate about the “slack” in the labor market and whether this slack will suppress inflation and wages. Federal Reserve chairman Janet Yellen argues there is considerable slack in the labor market, citing the country’s many part-time workers who want permanent jobs. While that view is popular at the Fed, it is not universal.

“Some participants reported that labor markets were tight in their districts or that contacts indicated some sectors or occupations were experiencing shortages of workers,” the Fed minutes said.

The minutes also show officials believe the economy is improving, despite a first-quarter setback.

ASA Staffing Index Offers Weekly Updates on Employment Trends

Looking for real-time data on temporary help employment? The ASA Staffing Index reports weekly changes in the number of people employed in temporary and contract work. The data will help your firm evaluate its performance against a national metric on both a weekly and long-term basis.

All U.S. staffing firms are invited to participate in the ASA Staffing Index survey. Every Tuesday, participants receive an email with the results of the weekly survey, including sales group figures. These data, which are not available anywhere else, allow staffing firms to compare how their business is doing on a weekly basis relative to similarly sized firms in the industry. There are no fees for participating in the survey.

Don’t get stuck with outdated data—sign up to participate in the ASA Staffing Index and receive the most up-to-date information about the staffing industry. For more information about the index, visit americanstaffing.net.
