The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Sept. 27 dropped by 8,000 to 287,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 49 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 297,000. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 4,250 to 294,750.

Indemnification is one of the most heavily negotiated, and potentially most significant, provisions of a purchase agreement, and understanding the terminology common to such agreements is essential when negotiating a deal. The Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing index fell to 56.6 in September from 59.0 in August, which had been the highest reading since March 2011. A figure above 50 indicates expansion. Hiring has been modest despite steady economic growth in the U.S. and increasing demand for manufactured products. The results of the survey indicate that high levels of new orders and production may not lead to larger numbers of factory workers. Fifteen of the 18 industries included in the survey saw output growth.
