Staffing World® Welcomes Geoff Smart, Plus Your Industry Peers

Staffing World 2014, the ASA annual convention and expo, continues today and tomorrow at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in metro Washington, DC. There are more than 1,600 attendees and exhibitors gathered to enjoy two more intense days of high-quality educational content, networking, and expo hall shopping.

At yesterday’s opening general session, ASA president and chief executive officer welcomed attendees and announced the launch of the newly redesigned ASA website (still available online at the same URL, americanstaffing.net).

During the second general session today, attendees honored the 2015 National Staffing Employee of the Year, Thomas Sutton. Then Geoff Smart spoke to an enthusiastic crowd. The second general session was sponsored by Monster.

Today’s educational workshops begin at 2:30 p.m., and the expo hall is open until 6 p.m. Visit the ASA Learning Pavilions in the expo hall, new this year at Staffing World—chat with fellow Staffing World attendees and experts about the Affordable Care Act and the skills gap. Plus, don’t miss the section forums at 4:30 p.m., followed by section receptions at 6 p.m.

Hudson Global Announces Third-Quarter Revenue

Hudson Global Inc. News Release (10/13/2014)

Hudson Global Inc. says that third-quarter revenue will remain flat year-to-year at $163 million, just below the range of $165 million to $175 million that was announced on July 31, primarily due to slower progress than expected in its more challenged markets and softer exchange rates than the prevailing rates at the time of guidance. Lack of growth in the top line did not allow the company to offset the selected investments made in its core growth areas and its transition costs toward a more efficient operating model.

PageGroup Reports Third-Quarter Results

Page Group (10/14/2014)

PageGroup reported gross profits of £132.9 million for the third quarter of 2014, up 4.7% (11.6% in constant currency) from £126.9 million in the third quarter of 2013. Gross profits for the Americas totaled £20.0 million, down 0.8% (up 9.6% in constant currency) from £20.1 million in the year-ago quarter.

Gross profits from temporary recruitment totaled £31.5 million, up 2.0% (8.0% in constant currency) from £30.8 million. By segment, gross profits totaled £53.3 million for finance and accounting, up 1.2% (7.6% in constant currency) from £52.7 million in the third quarter of 2013; £27.3 million for legal, technology, human resources, secretarial, and health care, up 5.4% (12.6% in constant currency) from £25.9 million; £27 million for engineering, property and construction, procurement and supply chain, up 9.9% (17.5% in constant currency) from £24.5 million; and £25.3 million for marketing, sales, and retail, up 6.4% (13.0% in constant currency) from £23.8 million.

NFIB: Small-Business Optimism Index Declines in September

NFIB News Release (10/14/14)

September’s National Federation of Independent Business optimism index retreated 0.8 points, falling to 95.3, and is now 5.0 points below the pre-recession average. Two index components fell sharply—job openings and planned capital outlays—which are directly relevant to gross domestic product growth and hiring.

NFIB owners increased employment by a seasonally adjusted average of 0.24 workers per firm in September, the 12th positive month in a row and the largest gain this year. Fifty percent of owners hired or tried to hire in the last three months, and 42% reported few or no qualified applicants for open positions. Twenty-one percent of all owners reported job openings they could not fill in the current period, down 5.0 points, not a good sign for improvements in the unemployment rate. Fifteen percent reported using temporary workers, down 1.0 point. Job creation plans faded, suggesting weaker job creation ahead.
