The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Oct. 18 rose by 17,000 to 283,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The reading was in line with the median forecast of the 52 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The four-week moving average of new claims dropped by 3,000 to 281,000, the lowest since May 2000.
