Congress is split over whether to renew a variety of expiring tax breaks and is only likely to renew them through 2014. It is unclear what will happen next to the roughly 50 tax provisions. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid discussed a broad package that would have made permanent a few of the most popular business provisions such as the research credit but it was scuttled by the Obama administration for being too favorable toward business and not doing enough for low income people.
