ISM Nonmanufacturing Index Slows to 56.5 in March

Wall Street Journal (04/06/15) Kathleen Madigan

The Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing purchasing managers index declined from 56.9 in February to 56.5 in March. Experts polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast no change. The employment index rose from 56.4 to 56.6, and the new orders index rose from 56.7 to 57.8.

Despite the small decline in the PMI, “The majority of respondents’ comments reflect stability and are mostly positive about business conditions and the overall economy,” ISM said in its report.

Small-Business Hiring Picking Up

USA Today (04/06/15) Paul Davidson

Businesses with fewer than 50 employees added 3.1 million jobs to the economy last year, and these employers are expected to account for a larger share of job growth in 2015 than at any other time since before the recession. Small businesses likely will represent more than half of all payroll gains for the year, according to Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, and have so far added 111,000 jobs this year, even as larger companies begin to experience slower growth.

The report also includes representations of sector-level data.

The data collected by this survey enable ASA to track staffing sales and gross margin trends. Participate in the Staffing Employment and Sales Survey by May 27 to get the staffing industry information you’re looking for.

Register to take the survey, or view the questionnaire, at americanstaffing.net. The survey is sponsored by ASA research partner CareerBuilder, and there are no fees to participate.
