BLS: Staffing Employment Up in August

Staffing firms created 10,700 new jobs in August, up 0.4% from July and 4.3% from August 2014, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year-to-year staffing job growth averaged 5.6% over the past 12 months.

Nonseasonally adjusted BLS data, which estimate the actual number of jobs in the economy, indicated that temporary help employment increased 2.1% from July to August. Year-to-year, there were 4.4% more staffing employees in August than in the same month last year.

“Staffing firms across several sectors continue to report challenges in meeting client demand for qualified temporary and permanent workers,” said Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of the American Staffing Association. “With the percentage of Americans working or looking for work stuck at only 62.6%, the lowest level in nearly four decades, the skills gap challenges confronting businesses today will continue to increase as economic growth continues and more people leave the workforce.”

Total U.S. nonfarm payroll employment increased by 173,000 jobs in August (seasonally adjusted), BLS reported. Incorporating revisions for June and July, the data showed that monthly job gains averaged 221,000 over the past three months, significantly less than the average of 247,000 for the prior 12 months.

The unemployment rate dropped from 5.3% in July to 5.1% in August.

ISM Nonmanufacturing Index Slips in August

Wall Street Journal (09/03/15) Eric Morath

The U.S. service sector grew at a slower pace in August but is expanding at a solid rate, a positive sign for the economy. The Institute for Supply Management’s nonmanufacturing purchasing managers index declined to 59.0 in August from 60.3 in July. The service sector has expanded for 67 consecutive months.

The report’s index for new orders decreased to 63.4 in August from 63.8 in July. Readings above 50 signal expansion. The employment index declined to 56 from 59.6 in July.

“We see a little cooling off on employment, but it’s still growing,” says Anthony Nieves, chairman of ISM’s nonmanufacturing business survey committee.

Retail, Manufacturing Contribute to Job Cuts in August

Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. News Release (09/03/15)

Employers in the U.S. announced plans to shed 41,186 workers from payrolls in August, a 61% decline from the 105,696 layoffs in July propelled by massive cuts in military staffing, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. The August total was 2.9% higher than the same month a year ago, when 40,010 job cuts were announced. The retail sector saw the heaviest job cutting in August. This marks the seventh month this year that the job-cut total was higher than the comparable month from 2014. To date, employers have announced 434,554 job cuts in 2015. That is up 31% from the 332,931 planned layoffs in the first eight months of 2014. With monthly totals averaging 54,319 job cuts, this year’s cuts are on track to exceed 650,000 for the year. That would be the highest year-end tally since 2009, though still only about half of that year’s 1.2 million job cuts.
