BLS: Staffing Employment Steady in November

Temporary help employment showed little change from October to November (-0.4%), and was 2.6% higher than in November 2014, according to seasonally adjusted data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Year-to-year staffing job growth averaged 4.9% over the past 12 months.

Nonseasonally adjusted BLS data, which estimate the actual number of jobs in the economy, mirrored seasonally adjusted data, decreasing 0.4% from October to November. Year-to-year, there were 2.6% more staffing employees in November than in the same month last year.

“Staffing and recruiting executives continue to report healthy seasonal demand across many sectors,” said Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of the American Staffing Association. “And job seekers should keep in mind that December is a very good time to get their résumés in to companies that are currently planning on adding new flexible and permanent positions in January.”

Total U.S. nonfarm payroll employment rose by 211,000 jobs in November (seasonally adjusted), BLS reported. Incorporating revisions for September and October, the data showed that monthly job gains averaged 218,000 per month over the past three months, considerably less than the average of 237,000 for the prior 12 months.

The unemployment rate held at 5.0% in November.

Purchasing Managers Index Falls to 55.9 in November

Wall Street Journal (12/03/15) Anna Louie Sussman

The U.S. service sector slowed its pace of expansion in November as business activity declined, but is still firmly in growth territory, according to the Institute for Supply Management. ISMs nonmanufacturing purchasing-managers index fell to 55.9 from 59.1 in October, marking the lowest reading since May. Despite the fall, November’s reading showcases the resilience of the domestic services sector, which has expanded each month for nearly six straight years. This growth contrasts with the manufacturing sector, which slipped into contraction in November for the first time since 2012, due to reduced demand from overseas economies hit by a strong dollar.

The business activity, new orders, and employment sections of the index all dropped by more than 4 points, but still posted readings above 55. Business activity had the sharpest decrease, falling to 58.2. The index’s fall was expected, particularly since the October reading was unusually high, according to Anthony Nieves, who oversees the ISM survey. “It’s still good rates of growth, it’s just cooled off a little bit,” he says.

U.S. Factory Orders Rise in October, Ending Streak of Declines

Associated Press (12/03/15) Josh Boak

U.S. factory orders rose 1.5% in October, after two consecutive months of declines, reports the U.S. Department of Commerce. The rebound was helped by rising demand for aircraft, computers, and machinery. Orders in the volatile aircraft category climbed 81% in October, orders for computers and electronics increased 1.9%, and machinery orders advanced by 1.2%. A separate category that serves as a proxy for business investment spending also improved, rising 1.3%.
