Staffing Employment Reaches Highest Q3 Mark Since 2000

U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 3.32 million temporary and contract workers per week in the third quarter of 2015, up 1.8% from the same period in 2014. Average weekly employment from July through September was the highest for any third quarter since 2000 and the second-highest number of staffing employees since the inception of the ASA Staffing Employment and Sales Survey in 1992.

“Staffing employment continues to grow as the demand for talent increases,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. “With 5.4 million job openings in the U.S., there are lots of opportunities for job seekers looking for flexible or permanent positions.”

Temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $30.69 billion in the third quarter of 2015—4.2% higher than in the same period last year.

On a quarter-to-quarter basis, staffing employment and sales were up 2.5% from second to the third quarter.

Korn Ferry International Announces Second-Quarter Fiscal 2016 Results

Korn/Ferry International News Release (12/09/15)

Korn/Ferry International reported revenue of $291.4 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2016, up 10% from $264.7 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2015. Net income totaled $18 million, down 29% from $25.4 million in the year-ago quarter.

By segment, revenue totaled $161.5 million for executive recruitment, up 4.6% from $154.4 million; $76 million for leadership and talent consulting, up 11% from $68.5 million; and $53.9 million for Futurestep, up 29% from $41.8 million. Job Growth Seen as Anemic as Workforce Ages

Wall Street Journal (12/08/15) Jeffrey Sparshott

The economy is expected to generate 9.8 million new jobs from 2014 to 2024, a 6.5% increase, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. While steady, that is a historically slow pace. Comparatively, 10-year job creation averaged almost 14% during the 2001-07 expansion, and close to 17% during the 1990s. The sluggishness reflects declining workforce participation as Baby Boomers retire and younger Americans opt out of employment. Those two trends are expected to continue to push the labor-force participation rate lower, to 60.9% in 2024 from 62.9% in 2014, the department estimates, which would mark the lowest level since 1973. DOL forecasts that the slowdown of labor-force growth will result in gross domestic product growth slowing from over 3.0% before the financial crisis to approximately 2.2% annually over the next 10 years.
