Commit to Safety During National Safety Month: Week Two

June is National Safety Month, and the National Safety Council is offering free materials to keep your workers engaged in safety preparations. The theme for this week is “Address Ongoing Covid-19 Safety Concerns.” As the pandemic continues, employers play an important role in expanding operations and returning remote workers to physical workspaces, building trust around vaccines, supporting mental health, and much more.

Protecting temporary worker safety and well-being is a top priority for ASA, and the association is proud to partner with NSC in promoting the 25th anniversary of National Safety Month.

ASA Offers Vaccine Literacy Resources for Staffing Firms

As part of its continued effort to support staffing firms’ response to Covid-19, ASA has launched the Vaccine Literacy Resources for Staffing Firms web page. The site provides valuable downloads and links employers can use to engage and educate workers about Covid-19 vaccines. ASA partnered with the Health Action Alliance to share these free resources, including a quick-start guide, sample communications, vaccine FAQs, a social media tool kit, and more.

Research shows that businesses and employers are a trusted source of information and are well-suited to advance vaccine literacy efforts. The vaccine literacy site also links to National Safety Council resources, developed by NSC’s “SAFER: Safe Actions for Employee Returns” taskforce.

Visit the Vaccine Literacy Resources page today and check back regularly for updates—ASA will post new resources as they become available.

ASA and Industry Advocacy Thwart Two California Bills Affecting Staffing

As the California legislature approached its deadline for moving bills from the house of origin to the second house, advocacy efforts led by ASA, its affiliated chapter California Staffing Professionals, and California lobbyist Mike Robson of Edelstein Gilbert Robson & Smith LLC were instrumental in derailing two California bills that would have had a major negative impact on the staffing industry.

AB 650 would have required covered employers, including health care staffing agencies, to pay hazard pay retention bonuses in 2022. AB 1192 would have required large employers to annually collect and submit wage and other worker-related statistics to the Labor and Workforce Development Agency.

The staffing industry worked with several business groups and trade associations, including the California Hospital Association, in opposing AB 650, urging lawmakers to reject the bill due to its cost implications. Regarding AB 1192, ASA and CSP argued that, given the varying nature of temporary assignments, temporary worker wage and other metrics submitted by staffing agencies would be misleading.

Following weeks of discussions and negotiations, both AB 650 and AB 1192 were moved to the inactive file, meaning they will not be taken up this year. Both bills can be reconsidered during the 2022 legislative session and ASA will re-engage if necessary next year.

ASA Staffing Index Offers Up-to-Date View of Staffing Employment

Looking for real-time data on staffing employment? The ASA Staffing Index reports weekly changes in the number of people employed in temporary and contract work, now including Staffing Starts (new assignments). The data will help your firm evaluate its performance against a national metric on both a weekly and long-term basis.

All staffing firms with U.S. operations are invited to participate in the ASA Staffing Index survey. Every Tuesday, participants receive an email with the results of the weekly survey, including figures by company size, and access to historical data and new dynamic charts. These data, which are not available anywhere else, allow staffing firms to compare how their business is doing on a weekly basis relative to similarly sized firms in the industry. There are no fees to participate in the five-question survey.

Don’t get stuck with outdated or unreliable data—sign up to participate in the ASA Staffing Index and receive the most up-to-date information about the staffing industry. For more information about the index, visit americanstaffing.net/staffing-index.
