The California Civil Rights Department recently published answers to frequently asked questions on SB 1162, a law enacted last year requiring staffing agencies and their clients to report temporary employee pay data to the state.

Learn about the law’s requirements from Adam P. Romero of the California Civil Rights Department during the ASA webinar “California’s Pay Data Reporting Law, SB 1162: Your Questions Answered.” It takes place Thursday, Feb. 2, 2–3:30 p.m. Eastern time.

ASA Staffing Index: Staffing Employment Rebounds in January

Staffing employment rebounded further in the week of Jan. 8–15, increasing by 3.4%, bringing the ASA Staffing Index to a rounded value of 101. Several staffing companies mentioned a holiday as a barrier to preventing further growth. Staffing jobs were up 0.2% from the same week last year.

New starts rose in the second week of the year, increasing by 7.0% from the prior week. More than half of staffing companies (53%) reported gains in new assignments week-to-week.

“Staffing employment has followed up a December holiday lull with two weeks of growth, in line with the typical seasonal pattern,” said Tim Hulley, ASA assistant director of research.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average edged down from the prior week to a rounded value of 95, but temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending Jan. 15 was 0.2% higher than the same period in 2021.

This week, containing the 12th day of the month, will be used in the January monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Feb. 3.

More Than Half of U.S. Adults Say Fully In-Office Workers Have Career Advantage Over Fully Remote Counterparts

Nearly six in 10 U.S. adults (56%) believe employees who work exclusively in-office have a competitive advantage over their fully remote counterparts when it comes to getting raises, bonuses, and promotions, according to the latest ASA Workforce Monitor® survey. However, despite this sentiment, less than half (48%) of workers report they are working completely in-person, 28% are working on a hybrid schedule, and 24% are fully remote.

“How, when, and where work will get done in the future is still an open question. Employers are trying to determine how hybrid and remote work affects productivity. And employees are trying to determine how the rise of hybrid and remote work is going to affect their careers, especially now that they’re contending with economic uncertainty,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. “One thing that is certain is that hybrid and remote work are here to stay for significant numbers of employees whose work could be done from home. For those workers who have jobs that require in-person work, the challenge for all employers is to create and maintain employee-centric organizations that embrace workplace and work schedule flexibility; equal opportunity for advancement; and open dialogues with employees about their needs, desires, and concerns.”

The Workforce Monitor online survey conducted by The Harris Poll also found that that 51% of women employees said they work fully on-site, compared with 44% of men. Furthermore, employed parents of children under the age of 18 were more likely to work a hybrid schedule (33% vs. 24%), while the majority of those without minor children work on site full-time (51% vs. 43%).

Mentor Match allows members to make valuable industry connections, define career goals, and gain insight from staffing peers. The goal of the program is to help members grow professionally and network with fellow ASA members.

The Mentor Match program runs in two six-month cycles per year (January–June and July–December). Once enrolled, ASA will match you with your mentor or mentee based on topics of expertise. Learn more at americanstaffing.net, or send an email to volunteer@americanstaffing.net.
