More U.S. Small Businesses Letting Workers Go Than Hiring

Gallup Economy (05/28/13) Dennis Jacobe

The Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index survey of 603 small-business owners reveals a net hiring index of -12 in April, meaning that more small-business owners are letting workers go than hiring them. The index has basically held steady since January 2010, but it marks an improvement from -27 in January 2010. Net hiring intentions were +6 last month, meaning that the percentage of owners planning to add net new jobs exceeds the percentage of those who expect to eliminate jobs over the next 12 months by a slim margin. Rising health care costs associated with the Affordable Care Act have prompted 20% of small-business owners to eliminate workers and 40% to delay hiring.

Freelancers Get Jobs Via Web Services

Wall Street Journal (05/28/13) Geoffrey A. Fowler; Brenda Cronin

Websites that connect workers with employers and customers, such as TaskRabbit, the digital-work marketplace Elance, ride-on-demand service Lyft, and craft marketplace Etsy are growing. Elance allows freelancers to bid for jobs they can complete over the Internet, and involves more than 500,000 businesses and two million freelancers.

These emerging platforms are encouraging a shift toward freelance work, and staffing firms are working to adapt. For example, ManpowerGroup is now working with OnForce Inc., a site that matches independent contractors with technology tasks.

Household Wealth Seen Rising at Least $1.8 Trillion as House Prices Climb

MarketWatch (05/28/13) Ruth Mantell

If home prices continue to increase, American households will see their net wealth rise by at least $1.8 trillion this year. The U.S. Federal Reserve reports that household real estate assets jumped more than $1 trillion from the end of 2011 to nearly $18 trillion at the end of last year. According to Joseph LaVorgna, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank Securities, “Rising home prices will encourage more construction, as builders and buyers become more confident that the assets will increase in value. Higher home prices also lift household net wealth, a very important indirect positive economic factor.” He believes consumer spending could surge by $180 billion.
