Staffing employment is up 9.6% compared with the same month last year, according to the ASA Staffing Index.
The index value for the month of December is 103, indicating that staffing employment increased 0.6% over the past 30 days. Typically, staffing employment peaks between mid-November and mid-December each year, after which it dramatically declines for several weeks before turning upward in mid-January.

Orders for durable goods rose 3.5% in November after a 0.7% drop in October, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted an increase of 2.0%. The Massachusetts Inspector General’s office has discovered that state agencies often use temporary employees to fill permanent or long-term positions. These workers remain temporary employees for years without transitioning to permanent employment. This is a result of the full-time equivalent cap, a hiring limit imposed by the commonwealth’s executive branch.
Some agencies are unaware that they can negotiate with staffing firms for lower contract costs. Dozens of workers have been temporary employees for more than three years, and 10 have been temporary employees for more than 10 years.
