Jobless Claims in U.S. Climbed Less Than Forecast Last Week

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Sept. 20 rose by 12,000 to 293,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The 46 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast claims of 296,000. The four-week moving average of new claims fell by 1,250 to 298,500.
U.S. Durable Goods Orders Fall in August

Orders for durable goods declined overall in August from a month earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Excluding defense goods, orders declined 19.0% in August after increasing 24.9% in July. New orders for nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft increased 0.6% in August, a hopeful sign for U.S. business expenditures.
Startup Aims to Boost Number of Qualified IT Workers

CodersTrust will finance the education of 100,000 information technology workers in impoverished nations over the next three years. The startup is helping Elance-oDesk Inc. freelancers upgrade their skills. Roughly 57% of the jobs listed on Elance and oDesk relate to IT and technology.
“In a year you can go from knowing nothing to being able to complete 60% of the coding tasks on sites such as Elance or oDesk,” said Ferdinand Kjærulff, founder and chief executive officer of CodersTrust.
