Staffing Employment Gains Moderated in Second Quarter of 2015

U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 3.24 million temporary and contract workers per week in the second quarter of 2015, up 2.9% from the same period in 2014, according to data released today by the American Staffing Association. Although the April through June period marks 22 consecutive quarters of year-to-year staffing employment additions, temporary and contract job growth moderated in the second quarter.

“Staffing companies continue to create employment opportunities, even with the slowing of overall job growth,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer. “The fact that there are currently nearly six million unfilled job openings in the U.S. is good news for job seekers, whether they are looking for employment flexibility or a permanent position.”

Temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $29.93 billion in the second quarter of 2015, 3.7% higher than in the same period last year.

On a quarter-to-quarter basis, staffing employment was up 3.5% from first quarter to second quarter, while temporary and contract staffing sales increased 6.6%.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (09/09/15)

The number of job openings rose to a series high of 5.8 million on the last business day of July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The prior series high was 5.4 million in May. The series began in December 2000. The number of hires and separations edged down to 5.0 million and 4.7 million, respectively. Within separations, the quits rate was 1.9% for the fourth consecutive month, and the layoffs and discharges rate declined to 1.1%.

Several sectors saw an increase in job openings in July, including professional and business services (122,000), accommodation and food services (82,000), retail trade (77,000), and nondurable goods manufacturing (27,000).

Decline in U.S. Jobless Claims Shows Resilient Labor Market

Bloomberg (09/10/15) Shobhana Chandra

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits in the week ended Sept. 5 fell by 6,000 to 275,000, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The decline highlights the persistent strength of the labor market and matched the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. The four-week average was little changed at 275,750.
